MT5 Signup: Broker Accounts and Server Login Checks

What should I check when an MT5 login fails or allows viewing but not trading?
Match broker, live/demo status, exact server and trading-account number as one set. If access succeeds but trading does not, investigate the access type separately from account creation.
Login diagnostic table
When login fails, the cause is more often the server name than the password. Brokers frequently run separate demo, live and regional servers.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| "Invalid account" | Account number and server do not match | Compare with the exact server name in your account email |
| Logged in, expected balance missing | Different saved account or a funding-record issue | Match account number, exact server and funding record against the broker portal |
| Logged in, order buttons inactive | Logged in with the investor password | Log in again with the master (trading) password |
| Broker missing from server list | Needs a search | Type the company name and use Find your broker |
| "No connection" | Network or server maintenance | Try another network; check broker notices |
Three separate steps
| Step | Provided by | What you get | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Install the platform | MetaQuotes or a broker's download page | The MT5 program or app | Thinking installation creates an account |
| 2. Open an account | The broker | Account number, password, server name | Thinking a live account opens inside MT5 instantly |
| 3. Log in | You, inside MT5 | Live prices and order panel | Picking a server name by guesswork |
MetaQuotes' help on opening an account says MT5 offers two account types: demo and real. Demo accounts work in a training mode with virtual money; real accounts trade real funds. The same page explains that the first step is selecting a broker, and if the company you want is not listed, you type its name and use "Find your broker".
Where a live account is really opened
MT5's account dialog offers three choices: connect to an existing trading account, open a demo account, or request a real account. For live trading, most brokers open the account in their client portal after identity verification, then send the account number and server name by email or show them in the portal. Referral and payback attribution is usually fixed at that portal registration stage.
So if a payback matters to you, the order matters:
- Register with the broker's portal through the sign-up button on the TradePayback broker detail page.
- Complete verification and open a live account in the portal.
- Log in to MT5 with the account number and server you were given.
Installing the app first and opening a demo inside it is fine for practice, but it is unrelated to broker attribution.
The investor password is read-only
An MT5 account normally has two passwords. The master password allows trading; the investor password allows viewing only. With the investor password you see quotes and history but cannot place orders. If you can log in but cannot trade, check this first.
Note that even the investor password grants visibility into your account. Nobody needs your master or investor password to check referral or payback attribution. TradePayback asks only for an account number.
Why brokers differ
Many brokers support MT5, but account types, server names, sign-up flows and how referrals are attached all vary. There is no single "MT5 sign-up"; the first question is always which broker's MT5 account you mean. CFD brokers covered on TradePayback include Current CFD broker conditions, PU PRIME and Vantage, each with its own detail page for displayed conditions and the sign-up route. You can compare them on the comparison page.
Demo or live? A quick self-check
If you are not sure which kind of account you are using, these signs help:
- The server name often contains "Demo" or "Live" (naming varies by broker).
- A demo account opened inside MT5 usually starts with a round virtual balance you did not deposit.
- Your broker's client portal lists your live accounts; a demo opened inside MT5 typically does not appear there as a live account.
- Check actual deposits and withdrawals in the broker's official account-management records; supported routes vary by broker and platform.
If your account is a demo, nothing you do in it creates real fees, so it cannot generate a payback.
A first-day checklist
- From the account email, write down the account number, server name and account type separately.
- After logging in, check the server name in the Navigator window for a demo label.
- Check account access permissions. Opening an order window alone does not prove trading rights, and you need not place an actual trade to test the login.
- If you need attribution checked, send only the account number via the contact page.
A worked example of a mismatched login
Suppose a broker email lists account 51234567 on a server named "Broker-Live02," and you type the account number but select "Broker-Demo" because it appeared first in the list. MT5 rejects the login as an invalid account, because that number does not exist on the demo server. Selecting "Broker-Live02" exactly as written resolves it. The password was never the problem. The names here are hypothetical, but this is an illustrative server-selection error rather than a verified customer case.
Mobile versus desktop
Where the broker supports these access methods, the same account may work on MT5 desktop, web and mobile, but each installation keeps its own list of saved servers and logins. If login works on your phone but not on a new laptop, the laptop simply may not have found the broker's server yet. Search for the broker by name in the new installation and select the exact server from your account email. Never install an MT5 build from an unofficial file-sharing link to "fix" a login; use MetaQuotes' site or your broker's official download page.
When to contact the broker instead
If the server and master password are both exactly right and login still fails, the account may be disabled, archived after inactivity, or still awaiting verification. Those are broker-side states that MT5 cannot fix. Contact the broker's support with your account number and server name.
FAQ
Does installing MT5 create an account?
No. MT5 is the platform; a live account is opened by a broker. You can open a demo account inside MT5 immediately, but it uses virtual funds.
Is there an MT5 referral code?
MetaQuotes' help describes no referral code for MT5 itself. Referral and payback attribution belongs to the broker account, so confirm it at the broker sign-up stage.
I can log in but cannot place orders. Why?
You probably logged in with the investor (read-only) password. Log in again with the master password your broker issued.
