Vantage Fee Discounts: Standard vs RAW Cost Break-Even

How do I find the Vantage Standard-versus-RAW cost break-even point?
Convert the spread difference into money at equal exposure and compare round-trip commission in the same currency. Add a customer rebate only after its account-specific basis is confirmed.
Building the break-even formula
For many USD-quoted pairs such as EURUSD, one pip on one standard lot is worth $10. That lets you put both accounts in the same unit:
- Standard round-turn cost ≈ Standard spread (pips) × $10
- RAW round-turn cost ≈ RAW spread (pips) × $10 + $6 commission
The break-even is where the two are equal. A $6 commission equals 0.6 pip at $10 per pip, so RAW is cheaper only when the Standard spread is more than 0.6 pip wider than the RAW spread. That shortcut holds only where a pip is worth $10 per lot; JPY pairs and other products need their own pip value.
What Vantage publishes about RAW commission
Vantage's RAW ECN account page says all RAW ECN clients pay a commission of USD $3.00 per standard lot, per side. The commission page lists the charge by account currency — for a USD account, $3 per side and $6 round turn — with other currencies such as AUD shown in their own units.
Two things follow:
- Commission is charged in account-currency units. "3" on an AUD account is not the same amount as "3" on a USD account.
- The published figures are framed around FX standard lots. Indices, commodities and share CFDs use different contract sizes and cost structures, so the same number does not carry over.
A worked hypothetical
The spreads below are invented for illustration.
| Item | Standard (hypothetical) | RAW (hypothetical) |
|---|---|---|
| Average EURUSD spread | 1.2 pips | 0.2 pips |
| Spread cost, 1 lot round turn | 1.2 × $10 = $12 | 0.2 × $10 = $2 |
| Commission, 1 lot round turn (USD account, as published) | $0 | $6 |
| Total | $12 | $8 |
Here RAW is $4 per lot cheaper. But suppose the Standard spread during your trading hours is actually 0.7 pip. Standard then costs $7 and RAW still costs $8, so Standard is $1 cheaper. The explanation is simply that the spread difference (0.7 − 0.2 = 0.5 pip) is below the 0.6-pip break-even.
So the real question is not "is RAW cheaper?" but "is the actual spread gap on my symbols, in my hours, larger than 0.6 pip?"
Recalculate for a different account currency
On an AUD account, commission is charged in AUD, while EURUSD pip value arises in USD and is converted. An exchange rate enters the formula. With a hypothetical 1 AUD = 0.65 USD, a 6 AUD round-turn commission is worth 3.90 USD, or 0.39 pip on one EURUSD lot. Under that hypothetical rate the break-even gap is about 0.39 pip, not 0.6. When the exchange rate moves, so does the break-even.
A discount is not extra margin
Changing account type changes the cost structure. It does not reduce leverage requirements or free up margin. A lower-looking commission is not a reason to take a larger position. Keep cost analysis and margin or risk management as separate decisions.
What gets missed when switching
- A new account has a new account number. What looks like a switch from Standard to RAW is often a separate new account.
- Payback attribution may not carry over automatically. Whether your existing link applies to the new account must be confirmed. Send the account number via the contact page.
- Swaps and other charges can differ by account. If you hold positions overnight, check swap terms alongside commission.
- Product availability can differ. Make sure the symbols you trade are offered on the new account type.
Deciding from your own records
- From the last month of Standard fills, estimate the average spread you paid per symbol.
- Observe RAW spreads for the same symbols in the same hours, on demo or small size.
- Convert the commission to pips in your account currency.
- If the spread gap exceeds the converted commission, RAW is cheaper; if not, Standard is.
- Check TradePayback's conditions separately from broker costs on the Vantage detail page, and compare brokers on the comparison page.
A note on non-FX symbols
If much of your activity is in gold, indices or share CFDs, do not reuse the 0.6-pip shortcut. Look up each symbol's contract size and the commission that applies to it on Vantage's pages or in your platform's symbol specification, then build a separate break-even for that symbol. A blended answer across very different products usually hides which account is actually cheaper for the symbol you trade most.
A short sanity check before switching
Write down three numbers before you open a new account: your average Standard spread on your main symbol, the RAW spread you observed for the same symbol and hours, and the commission converted to pips in your account currency. If the first minus the second is not clearly larger than the third, the switch is unlikely to reduce your costs in a meaningful way. "Clearly" matters, because spreads vary from day to day and a margin of a few hundredths of a pip can disappear in a single volatile session.
A simple monthly log
| Date | Symbol | Standard avg spread | RAW observed spread | Commission in pips | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example (hypothetical) | EURUSD | 1.0 | 0.3 | 0.6 | Gap 0.7 > 0.6, RAW cheaper |
Filling one row per main symbol each month turns the account choice into a record-based decision rather than a guess.
Distinguish observations from charges
A screenshot of a minimum spread is not an average execution cost. Record the observation time, sample count, account currency and contract size alongside each comparison. Demo quotations can help explain the pricing model, but they do not guarantee live execution quality. Existing statements provide actual charged commission; an untested account quotation remains an estimate. You can compare documented terms before opening or funding another account, and leave unsupported fields blank rather than force a precise verdict.
FAQ
Is RAW always cheaper than Standard?
No. On a USD account, the published $6 round-turn commission equals 0.6 pip per EURUSD lot. RAW wins only when the Standard spread is more than 0.6 pip wider than RAW.
Does an AUD account use the same break-even?
No. Commission is in account currency and pip value is converted at the exchange rate, so the break-even changes. Recalculate at the current rate.
Does my payback follow me if I change account type?
Do not assume it does. Confirm attribution for the new account number.
